Message from the President of the Message from the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on the occasion of the celebration of the National Day of Remembrance commemorating the (80) anniversary.( APS,08/05/2025)

ALGIERS - The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, sent a message on Wednesday on the occasion of the celebration of National Remembrance Day, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the massacres of May 8, 1945. Here is the APS translation:

"In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful,

Prayer and peace be upon his righteous Messenger,

Dear Fellow Citizens,

On May 8, the Algerian people proudly commemorate the anniversary of a decisive popular uprising, which brought the struggles of the National Movement, for decades, to a crucial moment in history... marking the birth of an armed struggle front, an option that has become the only way to free ourselves from the yoke of abject colonialism, as humanity has witnessed the worst atrocities it committed against the Algerian people for more than a century.

On this national day Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the May 8, 1945 demonstrations, Algerians must reflect on this painful event, which reveals the extent of the cruelty of the suffering endured by a resilient people, proud of their bravery, yesterday as today, and tomorrow, a people who repelled the aggression of our blessed land through their patience and sacrifices for their homeland.

The May 8 demonstrations are the most sincere expression of the Algerian people's commitment to freedom, dignity, and pride, the same people who rose up 80 years ago to confront the worst crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity of modern times, paying the heavy price of more than 45,000 martyrs for freedom and liberation. The commemoration of this painful anniversary, out of loyalty and fidelity to our predecessors who endured devastating horrors and tragedies for humanity and the earth, is a form of commitment to preserving the legacy of the martyrs, which anchors in the conscience the very nature of national identity, whose depth and landmarks were shaped by the resistance, struggles, and combat of generations united by love of the homeland.

This moving moment, which recalls the anniversary of the martyrdom of tens of thousands of the nation's dearest children, in Sétif, Kherrata, Guelma, Aïn Témouchent, and other cities, attests to the Algerian people's deep attachment to the glorification of their history, their nation, and their freedom.

Sovereign, proud, and victorious Algeria is building the foundations of its present, aspiring and working resolutely toward greater sustainable development. Driven today by the will of sincere patriots, jealous of their homeland and committed—at this crucial stage—to mobilizing its resources to preserve its place on the regional and global levels, strengthened by a historical capital that is a source of pride for the Algerian people, a people steeped in courage, and a constant concern to uphold the principles of justice and freedom.

Driven by its commitment to the rights of its people and in recognition of the sacredness of the legacy of resistance and struggle, out of loyalty to the spirit of November and the eternal message of the martyrs, Algeria can under no circumstances accept that the issue of memory be relegated to oblivion and denial.

The Algerian people, who once knew how to transform suffering and sacrifice into glory, will not see their momentum slowed by the harsh challenges. On the contrary, it will redouble its resolve in the face of those who oppose our principles and the independence of our national decision. It will thwart their maneuvers by continuing its march toward major infrastructure projects across all regions and by implementing a strategy aimed at placing our economy on a new trajectory of wise investment in Algeria's immense potential.

It is also about promoting the well-being of the Algerian people, who have always overcome adversity thanks to their genius, drawing inspiration from their history and the martyrs, in whose pure memory we pay tribute on this memorable occasion.

Long live Algeria,

Glory and eternity to our valiant martyrs,

May the peace and blessings of Allah surround you."
